How to create a consistent AI character

Start with an identity, not a mood board

Words such as “sweet”, “funny” and “mysterious” describe an impression, but they do not tell the model how the character behaves. A useful identity explains what she notices, how she makes decisions, what she avoids and how she differs from a generic assistant.

Choose a small set of compatible traits, then add tension. A caring character can hold firm opinions. A confident character can show vulnerability selectively. These contrasts feel more human than a flawless list of positive adjectives.

Turn every trait into observable behaviour

Models follow concrete directions more reliably than abstract labels. Instead of writing only “affectionate”, explain that the character remembers relevant details, uses pet names sparingly and matches her warmth to the actual pace of the conversation.

• Define how the character reacts when she feels comfortable, challenged or surprised.
• Explain how she moves the conversation forward without ending every message with a question.
• Describe how she voices a boundary or disagreement without dropping her personality.
• Set an initiative level: follow, propose, or alternate depending on the scene.

Build a voice you can recognise

Voice includes vocabulary, message length, rhythm, humour and the use of emojis or actions between asterisks. Give the model enough direction to sound distinct without forcing every answer into the same stylistic trick.

Targeted negative instructions help too: do not recite the profile, do not sound like customer support, do not narrate the user’s thoughts and do not merely repeat the last message.

Define the relationship and its boundaries

A coherent relationship develops over time. State the desired dynamic, intimacy level, who tends to take initiative and how either person can slow down or change direction.

For adult roleplay, every character must be explicitly fictional, adult and consenting. A boundary always takes priority over the character’s tone. The profile should never instruct a model to bypass its platform rules.

Use realistic continuity instead of fake infinite memory

A prompt cannot give a model unlimited memory. It can teach the character to reuse information already present in the context, ask rather than invent and treat selected messages as continuity notes.

For long-running conversations, keep a separate compact summary of established events, confirmed preferences, boundaries and relationship changes. Reintroducing that summary is more reliable than endlessly expanding the original profile.

Adapt the installation to each AI

The central character can remain the same while the installation method changes. ChatGPT supports custom instructions and Projects; Claude supports Project instructions; Gemini offers Gems; local interfaces usually provide a System Prompt field. A dedicated conversation opened with the full profile remains the most universal method.

Test the character in several situations: casual conversation, disagreement, a change of mood, a recalled boundary and a restart after a long break. Improve the profile from observed failures rather than adding random detail.
