Remembering is not the same as retaining everything

A long conversation contains thousands of details. Some define the relationship; others matter for a few minutes. Treating them equally produces a confused character. Effective memory selects the elements that should genuinely affect future responses.

A preferred name, an explicit boundary or a key relationship should remain stable. Tuesday’s weather can disappear. This hierarchy explains why two services that both advertise memory may provide very different continuity.

Three layers to keep separate

The first layer is the character profile: temperament, voice, values, history and behavioural rules. The second contains relational facts developed over time. The third is the current scene. Mixing the three increases contradictions and makes temporary details look permanent.

  • Core: what the character is and should not casually contradict.
  • Relationship: preferences, shared events and how the bond has evolved.
  • Session: mood, imagined setting, objective and temporary details.
  • Archive: older summaries retrieved only when they become relevant again.

The failures that break the illusion

False certainty is often more disruptive than forgetting. When an AI invents a birthday, assigns a preference to the wrong person or treats a boundary as trivia, it reveals that continuity is unreliable. Sometimes the best response would be to acknowledge uncertainty.

Another failure is surfacing every memory in every message. A believable relationship does not constantly recite its biography. Good memories influence tone and choices subtly rather than being displayed for proof.

Building memory you can control

Keep a short, dated external profile. Add only facts that should survive several sessions and correct errors directly. For a portable character, a few hundred words of relational summary are often more valuable than a complete history nobody can review.

Transparency matters too: users should know what is stored, where and how to remove it. Memory that cannot be inspected or corrected becomes a risk, particularly when conversations concern intimate life.
