What can travel with an image file
Phones and cameras often record EXIF metadata: device model, date, orientation, settings and sometimes GPS coordinates. Social apps may strip some fields, but that behaviour should not be assumed without verification.
The file name, editing information and embedded thumbnail may reveal additional details. Work on a copy so that any original you need remains in a protected location.
Remove it on the device you control
Recent photo apps often allow location information to be viewed or removed before sharing. Desktop file properties may provide a personal-information removal option. For a collection, a reputable local tool offers more consistent processing.
After export, inspect the final file with a metadata viewer rather than assuming success. Do not upload an intimate image to an unknown online cleaner: that solves one risk by sending the file to another third party.
Metadata do not cover visible clues
Mirrors, tattoos, windows, uniforms, notifications and room details can identify someone more readily than EXIF. Crop carefully, inspect reflections and obscure unique details. Avoid reversible edits and partially transparent brush strokes.
A face is not the only identifier. Body, room and context can be compared with public photographs. The strongest reduction is not combining explicit nudity and identifying details in the same frame.
Share under specific consent
Obtain agreement from every visible person and discuss retention, screenshots and forwarding. Disappearing messages may reduce persistence in the interface, but cannot prevent every copy or photograph of a screen.
Use end-to-end encryption where appropriate, secure the account with 2FA and confirm the recipient before sending. If an image is distributed without consent, preserve evidence and use official reporting mechanisms.
