From a touch on the screen to movement

During local use, the app generally sends a Bluetooth instruction to the device: intensity, pattern, duration or stop. A microcontroller translates that instruction to drive one or more motors. Practical range depends on the environment, phone and how the device is worn.

A physical remote follows a similar principle, often without an account or internet connection. It may offer fewer possibilities, but can respond quickly and continue when a phone is unavailable.

What changes over long distance

When two people are apart, their phones do not communicate directly by Bluetooth. One partner’s app sends the command to an online service, which forwards it to the phone near the device and then to the toy. Each stage must be available and correctly authenticated.

Encryption protects data in transit, but does not answer every privacy question. Depending on architecture and policy, the provider may still process identifiers, times, IP addresses or usage data. ‘Encrypted’ does not mean ‘no data’.

Apps, accounts and updates

The app handles pairing, patterns, invitations and sometimes firmware updates. Updates can repair a vulnerability, but they also reveal dependency: if the provider abandons the app, some functions may disappear.

Before buying, check the last app update, supported operating systems and the account-deletion process. An intimate device should also have a reset procedure before resale, donation or recycling.

Straightforward questions to ask

Technical expertise is not required to assess the foundation. Clear documentation, limited permissions and an accessible local stop are concrete signals. A mandatory account with no clear retention policy deserves further investigation.
