How to clean, dry and store a sex toy without damaging it

The short routine: switch off, clean as directed and dry completely

Switch the toy off, disconnect every cable and remove only parts the manual says are removable. Clean contact surfaces after use. For many waterproof silicone or ABS products, manufacturers recommend warm water and mild soap. A dedicated cleaner can make the routine more convenient, but it cannot make electronics submersible or correct residue that has not been rinsed away.

Drying is a full step rather than the pause between washing and storage. Water left inside a sleeve, around a button, at a seam or on charging contacts encourages odour, deposits and failures. Blot with a clean lint-free cloth where permitted, then air-dry with openings exposed. Do not close a pouch, replace a cap or begin charging until every area is dry.

Start with material, water resistance and intended disassembly

Before using a tap, find the surface material, water-resistance rating and removable parts. IPX7 describes temporary immersion under defined conditions for an intact product; it does not automatically include the remote, cable or damaged seals. Splash-resistant does not mean submersible. Without clear information, wiping the surface carefully is safer than inventing a bath test.

A mixed-material toy needs to be read by zone. A silicone head may detach from a motor body, a soft sleeve may leave a case, and a remote may be less protected than the main device. Never force parts apart. Keeping a photo of the care page and labelling the charging lead reduces guesswork when the product is already wet.

Silicone, ABS, glass, metal and porous materials need different care

Intact non-porous surfaces such as documented silicone, ABS, suitable glass and stainless steel are usually easier to inspect and wash. Heat and immersion still depend on the complete object. Boiling a small single-piece silicone product may be allowed by its manufacturer; applying the same idea to a rechargeable vibrator will destroy electronics. Never infer an extreme cleaning method from the outer material alone.

TPE, TPR, jelly and soft sleeves can retain more moisture or residue depending on their formulation. Rinse carefully, open only as instructed and give internal channels enough air. A surface that stays sticky, cracked or strongly odorous after correct care is not restored by more spray. A condom can add a barrier during sharing, but it does not turn a degrading material into a durable one.

Water and mild soap: ordinary, effective and easy to misuse

Use warm rather than very hot water and a small amount of mild soap when the manual permits. Work around grooves and joins without scratching the finish, then rinse away every trace. Strong perfume, bleach and aggressive household disinfectants can irritate tissue or damage the surface. Dishwashers combine heat, detergent and uncontrolled movement, making them a poor default for intimate products.

Do not assume antibacterial means necessary. Soap, mechanical washing and rinsing already remove a great deal from a washable surface. The objective is a repeatable process compatible with the product, not the strongest possible chemical. If infection risk, a medical condition or a shared porous object makes ordinary care uncertain, professional sexual-health advice or a dedicated personal toy can be more sensible than improvising sterilisation.

Connected toys: protect the charging area and the account

Switch off the product and remove it from power. Magnetic contacts, open ports and remotes deserve separate attention. Never reconnect a cable to damp or corroded contacts.

Cleaning a connected toy also has a digital stage before disposal or transfer. Remove partner associations, sign out where relevant and follow the manufacturer’s reset process. Delete unnecessary account data and use the correct route for electronic waste and batteries. A factory reset cannot clean the surface, and surface cleaning cannot remove account access: both layers need their own procedure.

Cleaner sprays and wipes: useful tools, not universal disinfection

Read the product label to learn whether a cleaner must be rinsed and which materials it covers. Spray onto the surface rather than electrical openings, allow the stated contact time and rinse where required. A cleaner does not penetrate a sealed seam, reverse a crack or guarantee sterilisation of every porous formulation. Avoid mixing products, because the resulting chemistry and residue have not been assessed for the toy.

Wipes are convenient during travel or before a full wash, but they do not automatically reach textured interiors. Fragrance and preservatives may also leave residue. Use them only where the manufacturer permits, and complete the normal routine when possible. An expired or unlabelled bottle should not be used simply because it is marketed for adult products.

Sharing, body openings and infection risk

Sexually transmitted infections can pass through shared toys that have not been handled correctly. Planned Parenthood and NHS sexual-health services recommend cleaning toys and using a new barrier between people or body openings. Plan this before the session: have compatible condoms available, keep a bin nearby and agree which objects are personal.

Never move a toy directly from anus to vagina or mouth. Remove the barrier without spreading fluids, clean as instructed and use a fresh one before another contact. Dry without adding dust or trapping water

Blot rather than scrub a delicate membrane, then place separated parts on a clean surface with air around openings. A hair dryer, radiator and direct sun can deform materials and shorten battery life. A bathroom still full of steam is not the best drying environment even though it was convenient for washing.

Check sleeves and closed cavities with light rather than touch alone. Position them so air can move without forcing the material inside out unless the brand permits it. There is no universal number of minutes. Store when contacts, seams and internal surfaces are dry, not when an arbitrary timer ends.

Store separately and away from heat

A clean pouch limits dust and light but must not receive a damp toy. Separate materials that may react during prolonged contact and close lubricant bottles to prevent leaks. Keep cables in another compartment so connectors do not mark soft surfaces. A cool, dry drawer is better than a car, sunny shelf or cupboard beside a radiator.

Storage also concerns privacy and household safety. A plain box can help around children, flatmates or travel, but do not claim it blocks moisture or unauthorised access unless designed to do so. When replacement is more appropriate than another wash

Stop using a toy when its surface becomes persistently sticky, cracked, sharp, badly discoloured or strongly odorous despite correct care. On a motorised product, add battery swelling, unusual heat, corrosion and damaged cables to the warning list. Additional cleaner cannot repair a degraded surface or lost seal.

Keep proof of purchase and photographs if a defect appears under warranty, and contact the manufacturer rather than opening a sealed device. Before recycling a connected model, remove accounts and pairings. Do not pass a used intimate product to another person as though it were ordinary consumer electronics.

A brief monthly inspection makes this decision less subjective. Look at seams under good light, feel for a new rough edge, check whether buttons and charging contacts remain stable, and compare the battery behaviour with normal use. Retire the device while the concern is small rather than waiting for a failure during use. Cleaning preserves an intact product; it is not a repair technique or a warranty test.
